HOUSTON, TX, January 7, 2005 — John Eagle Honda of Houston, John Eagle Honda of Clearlake and John Eagle Acura of Houston recently donated $100,000 to the Red Cross Relief Fund to help tsunami survivors. And they’re challenging other Texas businesses to do the same.
“We are all very lucky and blessed people,” said Mac DeLaup, partner of John Eagle Honda. “This is the least we could do. As a group we hope to send a message to other business men in Texas to do what they usually do: provide a big Texas helping hand to these unfortunate people.”
Immediately after the tsunami disaster, The John Eagle Partners forged a plan to donate a portion of sales per car to the cause. However, they quickly realized that an immediate contribution was needed.
“The norm in our business is to facilitate a fund raiser tied to the number of vehicles sold at our dealerships, and quite frankly, that has a lesser financial impact for us,” said Tom Tyrrell, partner at Honda of Clearlake. “But we decided we wanted to help. And we wanted to do it right away.”
The John Eagle partners hope that their donation to the Red Cross will go towards much needed supplies and materials that will make an immediate impact and give tsunami survivors some comfort after the disaster. But aside from monetary contributions, the partners also say their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy.
“Our prayers go out to all the survivors for a quick recovery," said Erik King, partner of John Eagle Acura. “We tried to come up with a way to make the biggest possible impact between the Eagle dealerships in Houston and Dallas. It’s hard to imagine the devastation these people have endured so I just hope we have provided some help in their time of need.”
With more than five million people affected by the tsunami and its aftermath, the total number of people affected by this tragedy is roughly equal to the total population of Houston. This fact is not lost on the John Eagle partners.
“You never know when something terrible like this is going to strike your community,” said Mike Wilson, partner of John Eagle Mazda and Volvo of Clearlake. “If we were in the same situation, I’d like to think that someone would come to our aid as well. It just seemed like the right thing to do.”
